Gournia Archeological site

The Cretan Pompeii. The Minoan settlement (2300-1450 B.C.), with the unknown name.

In the south-western of Mirabello's gulf, the unfortified city of Gournia has been habituated around the 2300 B.C. and destroyed by earthquake in 1450 B.C. It was abandoned finally in 1200 B.C. To the archaeological site are saved :

  • the 2 main Roads of the Ancient City, 
  • the Undergrounds and the Ground floor of the buildings,
  • the basement of the Palace,
  • the Altar and
  • a rudimentary Theatre.
