Milatos Cavern

At the north-western coast of Lasithi prefecture, 1km from Milatos village, is found the homonym cavern, widely known as reason of dramatic events that marked the region on 21 February 1823A.D. When 3500 women and children, decided to exit after two-month of narrow siege on behalf of the Turkish conquers. From 3500 only the most beautiful and newest girls are saved of the slaughter, after they were sold to the slave-markets of Egypt. The cavern apart from its historical value presents also intense geological interest. Each year takes place a holy memorial into the cavern, assembling crowd of pilgrims from around.
