Labyrinth of Gortyna

Perhaps the most important file of newer history. The labyrinth of Gortyna at 3 km northern than Gortyna, actually is an ancient quarry, maybe Minoan, and apart from its historical and geological value, is also characterized by a different and unusual human intervention.

On the walls of the cavern there are personal signatures, by all visitors, since XV century A.D. The older signature that has been recorded until now was written in 1440A.D. More than 1000 signatures could record a team of 12 individuals after hundreds hours of work. Some writers believe that the cavern was the mythic labyrinth of King Minos where he kept captive Minotaur.

Big part of quarry destroyed by an explosion during the II World war.
